FAQ
How much is it?
There is no fee with the magnet testing/program/school.
What grades do you accept?
We accept students entering 9-11th grade. The Diploma Programme and Career-Related Programme are two year programs so students cannot enter after 11th grade. We strongly recommend students enter in 9th grade in order to have the rigor and prerequisites necessary to complete the DP or CP.
When should we hear back from the testing?
Our admission letters are mailed March 3, 2023.
How much is lunch?
Thanks to an FDA grant, breakfast and lunch is free to all students.
What happens if I quit or am dismissed from the IB programme?
Unless you apply and are approved for a zone exemption, you will return to your zoned school. If you are zoned for Richmond, you will simply change your schedule. There are several AP classes that are available to all students.
I am not zoned for Richmond.
All students in Richmond County are eligible for magnet programs
What is the entrance test for the IB Programme?
I-Ready.
Tell me about I-Ready...
I-Ready is an adaptive reading and math basic skills test. As the students answer questions correctly, the questions get harder. If the student misses a question, they get easier in an attempt to zero in on a student's exact level. It is not a timed test, so students have time to work out problems. I do not know of a program to prepare students for the test, so I recommend reading the questions carefully and fully and not rushing through. I feel best when kids come out saying it was hard!
How much are AP and IB exams?
The county covers the costs of those exams.
Can my student also take AP classes/exams?
Yes. Typically, our freshmen take 1-2 AP classes and our sophomores take 3-4 AP classes. Many of our IB 11-12th graders also take AP exams from the content learned in IB classes.
Can my child play sports there?
Absolutely! We have football, cross country, softball, football cheerleading, volleyball, swimming, wrestling, boys basketball, girls basketball, basketball cheerleading, baseball, girls soccer, boys soccer, golf, tennis, and track and field. The majority of our IB students play sports.
Speaking of sports....
When students come to our school as 9th graders, they are immediately eligible for sports. Transfer students (any time after the first day of 9th grade) from other GHSA schools including all RCBOE schools, Columbia County, and Aquinas, for example, must have moved physical residences or apply for a hardship waiver to play sports once they transfer, even if they didn't play that sport the previous season. Otherwise, they can play JV, if available, or must wait one calendar year from the date of transfer.
