Baseball is very popular in some countries in Latin America—especially Cuba and the Dominican Republic! Even though soccer is usually the most popular sport in Latin America, baseball is more popular in the Caribbean and in countries like Nicaragua, Panamá, and Venezuela. There are many famous baseball players from Latin America who have made baseball history. In 2015, there were more than 200 players in MLB (Major League Baseball) who were born outside of the United States! Here are a few of them:
- Rod Carew is a famous hitter from Panamá who came to the United States when he was 14 years old. He went on to play on a professional team. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame and the Caribbean Baseball Hall of Fame for being a good hitter—he hit more than 3,000 balls in his career! He has even been on the cover of Time Magazine.
- Pablo Sandoval is another famous baseball player in the U.S. He came from Venezuela. He has played for the Boston Red Sox and San Francisco Giants. He was a two-time All Star and won three world championships!
- Jose Abreu is a famous Latin American baseball player from Cuba. He played for the Chicago White Sox and was the unanimous 2014 American League Rookie of the Year. Some think he was one of the best rookie players of all time!
