Integers in the Real World

Essential Question

How can positive and negative numbers be used in the real world?

Standards

NS.5 - Understand that positive and negative numbers are used together to describe quantities having opposite directions or values (e.g., temperature above/below zero, elevation above/below sea level, debits/credits, positive/negative electric charge), use positive and negative numbers to represent quantities in real world contexts, explaining the meaning of 0 in each situation.

Learning Targets

NS.5- I can use positive and negative numbers to represent quantities in real world context.

Key Vocabulary

Key terms:

Integers- whole numbers and their opposites, including zero.

Positive Numbers- a whole number greater than (to the right of) zero.

Negative Numbers- a whole number less than (to the left of) zero.

Opposite Numbers- numbers that are the same distance from zero in the opposite direction (right side vs left side).

Mini-Lesson

Guided Notes: integers in the real world, opposite numbers, and represent situations with integers.
