S7L3a. Explain the role of genes and chromosomes in the process of inheriting a specific trait.

  2. Heredity-the passing down of physical or mental characteristics from one generation to the next.
  3. Chromosome-found in nucleus or cytoplasm of living organisms and carry genetic information in the form of genes.
  4. Gene-a unit of heredity, transferred from a parent to offspring.
  5. Allele-found on a chromosome, one of two or more variations of a gene.
  6. Genotype-refers to the alleles. (BB, Bb, bb)
  7. Phenotype-refers the observable trait. (brown hair, green eyes)
  8. Dominate-a trait that happens more frequently than another.
  9. Recessive-a trait that happens less often, the weaker trait
  10. Homozygous-having two identical alleles of a particular gene  (BB,bb)
  11. Heterozygous- having two  different alleles of a particular gene (Bb)
