Using the Mobile App


On mobile devices, Canvas is designed to be used with the Canvas apps not the mobile browser.

NOTE: Canvas has apps for iOS and Android. The student app is different from the parent app.

In your app store, the Canvas Student App has a red Canvas icon:


Using a mobile device is not always the best option for some online work. Sometimes using a laptop is a better choice. See comparisons below.

Screen Size

Larger screen shows more contents on a single page.

Smaller screen requires the user to scroll up and down to view contents.

Font visibility

Fonts clearly visible due to screen size.

Not as visible due to small screen size

Zooming

Required occasionally.

Required frequently - to view smaller print or images.

Processor Speed

Interface generated fast due to processing speed being faster.

Less processing speed due to battery life. Interface sometimes lags.
Best if you work off of wifi and not data.

Output

Output shown on a web browser.

Output shown as a separate activity within an application.

Data Entry/Typing data

Easier task with a larger keyboard.
Better for typing papers.

Can be difficult due to smaller keyboard.
Acceptable for short answers.
Note: Some mobile devices do not offer word processing features.

Storage

Higher storage capacity.
Better when needing to save a large work.

Less storage capacity. Most data has to be saved on a web server.

User Physical Location

Larger device means user has to sit in particular location to allow for space.

Can be used while traveling or walking around.
