The Supremacy Clause

The Supremacy Clause is the common name of Article VI, Clause 2 of the United States Constitution. The clause establishes the Constitution and federal laws as the “supreme Law of the Land,” above state laws.  The "supremacy clause" is the most important guarantor of national union. It assures that the Constitution and federal laws and treaties take precedence (more important) over state law and binds all judges to adhere to that principle in their courts.

Examples:

For example, the Voting Rights Act of 1965, an act of Congress, preempts state constitutions, and Food and Drug Administration regulations may preempt state court judgments in cases involving prescription drugs.
