Spending and Funding Influences on the Election

Most individuals can donate up to $2,800 per election, per candidate during the 2019-2020 elections. That means you can donate up to $2,800 each to:

  • One or more candidates in a federal primary election

  • One or more candidates in a federal general election

Campaigns are prohibited from accepting contributions from certain types of organizations and individuals. These prohibited sources are:

  • Corporations, including nonprofit corporations (*although funds from a corporate separate segregated fund are permissible)
  • Labor organizations (*although funds from a separate segregated fund are permissible)
  • Federal government contractors
  • Foreign nationals
  • Contributions in the name of another

*A political committee established, administered or financially supported by a corporation or labor organization, popularly called a Corporate or Labor Political Action Committee (PAC)

 

Supreme Court Ruling of 2014

Court Case: McCutcheon v. Federal Election Commission, 134 S.Ct. 1434 (2014)

Significance: States can place a limit on how much any individual or group contributes to any one campaign, but cannot impose aggregate  limits (combination of total amounts) on how much and individual or group contributes to all campaigns during an election cycle.
