Class Overview

Health / Physical Education

This required, coeducational course integrates the development of physical fitness and sports with units of study aimed at instilling health knowledge, desirable personal habits, positive attitudes, and good decision-making skills. This process of learning about the needs and care of the human mind and body is essential for optimal living.

Class Learning Objectives

HE H.S.1: Students will comprehend concepts related to health promotion and disease prevention to enhance health.

HE H.S.2: Students will analyze the influence of family, peers, culture, media, technology, and other factors on health behaviors.

HE H.S.3: Students will demonstrate the ability to access valid information and products and services to enhance health.

HE H.S.4: Students will demonstrate the ability to use interpersonal communication skills to enhance health and avoid or reduce health risks.

HE H.S.5: Students will demonstrate the ability to use decision-making skills to enhance health.

HE H.S.6: Students will demonstrate the ability to use goal-setting skills to enhance health.

HE H.S.7: Students will demonstrate the ability to practice health-enhancing behaviors and avoid or reduce health risks.

 

Student Expectations 

  1. Respect the rights and property of others
  2. Follow directions
  3. Be prepared for class daily
  4. No cell phones, headphones, make-up, food, drink or gum in the classroom/gym
  5. Abide by the rules of the RCSS handbook at all times during class

Classroom management/discipline plan:

    1st incident results in a student teacher meeting to discuss behavior plan

    2nd incident results in parent contact and the development of a behavior plan

    3rd incident result in meeting with administration

  • Behaviors that are safety issues may result in immediate removal from class

Non-Dress / Tardy Consequences: The Health / PE Department uses the same policy and consequences that are established for tardies:

            1st non-dress, with participation – warning

            1st non-dress, without participation – phone call home

            2nd non-dress, with participation – warning

            2nd non-dress, without participation – phone call home

            3rd non-dress, with or without participation – phone call home

            4th non-dress, with or without participation – phone call home

            5th non-dress, with or without participation – referral to Administration

Grading Policy 

Students are required to complete all assignments and projects to receive full credit. There will be a penalty for all late assignments. Any late assignments after two days will not be taken. The evaluation process will consist of class / group participation, assignments, quizzes, tests and projects.  

Evaluation Process - The following will be used to determine your grade:

  1. Participation Points – each day of PE is worth 15 points. In order to receive all 15 points you must:
    • Come to class (5 points)
    • Participate in the class activities the entire class period (10 points)
  2. Written Work – Health / PE notebook, quizzes and tests
  3. Absences / Make-up – If you have an EXCUSED absence, see your PE teacher for a make-up assignment. If you do not turn in make-up work, you will lose points for ANY absence.
  4. Grading Scale:
  • 100 - 90% = A
  • 89 - 80% = B
  • 79 - 75% = C
  • 74 - 70% = D
  • 69 - 0% = F
