Please review the following before taking the Chapters 1-7 Test

Chapters 1-7 introduce the idea of endings on nouns and verbs in Latin. It is essential that you study and memorize the chart on page 41 and understand the idea of nominative and accusative cases as shown at the top of page 41.

Nouns have declension. Learn the three declensions by studying the chart on page 41.

Nouns have gender. 1st declension nouns are feminine. 2nd declension nouns are masculine. 3rd declension nouns may be either masculine or feminine. You will have to look up the noun in a dictionary to find the gender of a third declension noun (unless it is obvious, like mater - mother)

Nouns have number - that means that they have different endings for singular and plural. Again, study chart on page 41. A subject must agree with its verb, so a singular subject will have a verb with a singular ending See page 14 for singular and plural. A plural noun will have a verb with a plural ending:

puella sedet - the girl sits

puellae sedent - the girls sit

Adjectives agree with the noun that they modify. See page 34 for the explanation of adjective agreement. Adjectives have 1st and 2nd declension (feminine and masculine) endings. Learn the 1st and 2nd declension femnine and masculine endings. They are the same as the nouns on page 41.

Verbs have a form that ends in -re. This form of the verb is called an infinitive and translates with "to": portare = to carry. Read on infinitives on page 26.
