In today's online lesson, students will learn about the virtue of "pietas" which the Romans valued in their heroes. They will read stories of early Roman heroes and respond to a few reflection questions on their reading. The learning target is for students to understand the importance of "pietas" in Roman culture and to learn about the heroes Horatius, Mucius Scaevol, Cloelia and Cincinnatus. Students will complete the following assignment:

Read the passage "Legendary Heroes of Early Rome" on pages 141 -143 of the Ecce Romani Textbook. Then create a document to answer the questions:

1) Define "pietas."

2) Explain how each hero embodied "pietas".

               Horatius -

               Mucius Scaevola -

              Cloelia -

              Cincinnatus -

3) All Roman children learned these stories as part of their education. Choose one of the stories and give your impression of the hero described.

4) Write about a story you have learned about a famous American hero in your education. What is your impression of this hero and the story you have learned?

Homework: Students will review Chapter 17 Vocabulary.
