About Latin I

If you like words and enjoy understanding where things originate, you should love this course! Latin is the language of the ancient Romans. The Roman language and culture have influenced modern western culture in so many ways. Nearly 60% of English words are derived from Latin. Exploring this language will help you build on your understanding of English and the study of Romance languages. You will also develop a deeper appreciation of the world you live in.
Class Learning Objectives
While we are a language class, our focus is primarily on reading the language. We use a reading course to learn about the vocabulary and grammar of the language and the culture of the Roman people.
- Vocabulary! Learn lots of new words and expressions. Build your English vocabulary to improve your English reading skills and your SAT scores.
- Grammar! Learn how to learn a language. How is it structured? How do the different parts work together to create meaning? Latin helps you to develop a strong understanding of grammar.
- Translation! Develop your reading skills. Translation helps you to be a more careful reader.
- Culture! Learn about the ancient Roman people. Who were they? How did they live? What did they think? How has their world influenced our own?
