ELAGSE6RL3: Describe how a particular story’s or drama’s plot unfolds in a series of episodes as well as how the characters respond or change as the plot moves towards a resolution.

Title: The Rhythm of a Character

Scenario:  Your favorite book is being made into a movie. The producers of the movie are looking for teenagers who have read the book to design the soundtrack for the protagonist or any other one (1) round/dynamic character from the novel. Using the characteristics—direct characterization (what the author tells specifically about the character; adjectives used to describe character) and indirect characterization (what the character looks like, says, thinks, and what others think of him or her)—of the chosen character, begin researching songs that convey those traits. You will need to identify the different parts of the story where each song should be played during the film. You must explain how your musical selection of choice exhibits the character’s personality at that moment in the narrative. Once you have assigned each song that displays the character’s thoughts, feelings and actions throughout the text, explain how the character responds or changes as the plot develops. You must provide at least 3 different songs.

Tasks:

Task 1: Analyze the Character

Choose a round/dynamic character from a novel. Identify the novel and character. Complete a character analysis graphic organizer Download character analysis graphic organizer for the chosen character.

Task 2: Make a Playlist

Complete the Playlist graphic organizer Download Playlist graphic organizer in which you will identify the character trait, song, reason for choosing the specific song, and when the song should play. You must have at least 3 songs.

Task 3: Producers Pitch

Now it is time to present your playlist for approval to the movie directors. create a presentation in which you describe the character, share the songs (specific portions of the song), and explain why the songs should be included in the playlist.

Example of direct characterization:

J.K. Rowling directly characterizes Harry Potter in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone: "Perhaps it had something to do with living in a dark cupboard, but Harry had always been small and skinny for his age . . . Harry had a thin face, knobbly knees, black hair, and bright green eyes. He wore round glasses held together with a lot of Scotch tape because of all the times Dudley had punched him on the nose. The only thing Harry liked about his own appearance was a very thin scar on his forehead that was shaped like a bolt of lightning."
