Assignments: Student Annotation Submissions (Instructors, Students) |
Instructors can now use an annotated assignment type (one of the Online submission types) to upload a file for students to annotate on and submit to Canvas. Students will use the DocViewer annotation tools (think Speedgrader for instructors) to complete the Assignment. Peer Reviews are available for this submission type, but not anonymous peer reviews. Instructors can also select the Usage Rights of the file they have attached to the Annotation Assignment, including who the copyright holder is.
This is a great addition for instructors who may be used to using a 3rd party tool to annotate on PDFs or other file types. Communication to instructors, students, and any observers will be important to do with this release as it should be a popular submission option for teaching/learning. Be mindful that this submission type is not currently supported on mobile devices (or the Canvas mobile app) but instructors can use the File Upload submission type in conjunction with the Annotation Assignment so that students can annotate using the mobile app File Upload features. |
New Quizzes: Save and Build Buttons (Instructors) |
The feature is to release (again). Save = draft version of New Quizzes; Build = launches question builder in New Quizzes |
User Settings: Auto-Show Closed Captioning (All) | Users can automatically enable closed captioning to show for all recorded Canvas videos or uploaded videos into a course. Videos embedded via a third-party tool (i.e. YouTube) are not supported for this auto-show closed captioning; Studio videos are not currently supported either but will be in a future release. |
Users: Maintenance Windows (All) | Regular maintenance windows will be implemented for all regions beginning in July 2021. Most of these windows will occur between 12:00 am and 4:00 am local time on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of each month. Most maintenance should only last for a few minutes. This will appear in the user’s Default Time Zone section of their user settings. Admins will always be notified in advance of a planned maintenance. |

Speedgrader: Submission Reassignments (Instructors) | When instructors leave an assignment level comment in Speedgrader, the “Reassign Assignment” button can be clicked. The due date of the assignment does not change but the item appears on the student’s To-Do list for them to resubmit. This feature does not work on external tool (LTI) assignments, assignments with no submission, or on paper assignments. |

Gradebook: View Ungraded as Zero (Instructors) | This is a visual setting in the Gradebook which allows instructors to treat all ungraded assignments in Canvas as 0. This also impacts the Assignment groups calculation as well as the student’s overall grade calculation in the course. However, this is only a view into this and students, TAs, or observers will not see these grade totals or assignment grades from their Grades view. A pop up window appears when enabling this (from View - View Options - View Ungraded as 0) warning instructors that this only from their view. |
Rich Content Editor: Pretty HTML Editor (All Users) | By default, when clicking into the HTML editor of the RCE, users will see a “pretty” HTML editor that makes it easier to see the HTML on the page. Users can switch back to the Raw HTML by clicking Raw HTML Editor at the bottom of the RCE screen. |
